Miscellaneous photos

One morning as I sat down to breakfast, I looked out the window and saw that a small animal had fallen in the pool.  Unfortunately, ground squirrels or lizards will fall in trying to get a drink.
I ran out to get the net, which is usually attached to a long pole.  This time it wasn't, so I just grabbed the pole.  It was difficult to help the animal as the pole was slippery, but I eventually got him over to the side.
I didn't think it looked like a squirrel, but I couldn't see just what he was.  As I lifted him over the side and onto the cool deck, I could see that he was a rat!  On quick second look, though, I noticed his long tail and back legs, and realized that he was a kangaroo rat.
He was totally exhausted.  I'm sure I scared him to death and he tried to get moving a couple times but he'd just keel over on his side.
As I put the pole back, I heard a plop, and, sure enough, he'd fallen back in the pool.  This time since he was close to the edge, I grabbed the net and scooped him out.  I carried him away from the pool and put him under a bush.  He didn't even try to move, which gave me a great opportunity to get a picture of him.
I checked on him about an hour later.  He had his eyes closed and was very still.  I had to lean down close to him to see a slight movement of his ribs to know that he was still alive.  He was sleeping and not even the noise of my stepping close to him on the rocks woke him up.
A couple hours later I checked and he was gone.  I quickly scanned the pool to be sure he hadn't gone back in, but all was clear.

This is a picture of MooCow.  She's a neighborhood cat who visits our yard to drink from the bird's dish (which is on the ground) or from the pool.  We don't know her real name or where she lives.  Hailey calls her the MooCow Kitty because of her coloring.  So I put this on the web just for Hailey
